When ever I run across a one room school house, I stop and take a picture. Like big wooden barns, they are fast disappearing and I feel the need to document them before they completely disappear from the landscape. I am fortunate so many in Kansas were constructed of native stone and have weathered time and Kansas weather well.

I have loved one room schoolhouses since I was a child and my Grandma told me stories about attending a one room schoolhouse. She rode a horse to school and talked about plodding through snow drifts as high as the horse. Her sister, my Great-Aunt Agnes taught in a one room schoolhouse.

Schoolhouses evoke sweet memories of a simpler time. I hope you enjoy these pictures. Feel free to contact me with stories, pictures or locations of other Kansas schoolhouses at

Bourbon County, Garland, Kansas One Room Schoolhouse

This dilapitated one room schoolhouse is located near Garland, Kansas.

The nearest address to the schoolhouse is 2204 Fern Road, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701

The school is located about 8.5 miles south of Fort Scott, the closest intersection is US 69 Hwy. and County Road 56.  Coordinates are N 37 degrees 44.812, W 094 degrees, 42.267.

The schoolhouse is in very poor shape and surrounded by a fence.

With a zoom lens you can still see the bead board on the walls through a huge gaping hole in the side of the building. I have a phobia about looking inside empty buildings.  I think it is because once when peering inside an old building, I saw a dead coyote.  Traumatizing!

The bell tower has seen better days...

The sign above the door is unreadable. I would guess the school was turned into a store of some kind after it's school days were discontinued.

Overgrown, but still picturesque, one room school.

The school has "outside facilities".

The school sits next to another old building, H.R. Brown Meats and Groceries.

I have a phobia about taking pictures into empty buildings.  As I was holding my camera up to the window, I felt movement around my feet and looked down...

I've heard of watch dogs...but watch snakes?

After seeing me, Mr. Snake slithered back up inside the red planks. Apparently, he is a strong believer in higher education.

Here's the only picture I took through the window before being interupted.
